UK IPv6 Experimental Service Connectivity

As the roll-out of native IPv6 dual-stack services on JANET and the core BARs happens, a number of universities will begin to have the option to gain native IPv6 connectivity.

Some universities, e..g those in regional networks without native IPv6 support yet, will rely on tunnelled IPv6-in-IPv4 links until the MAN production networks transition to support native IPv6.

The basic topology for sites connecting via tunnels features a single core router managed at ULCC. The service offers /48-sized site network prefixes to universities whether they use native or tunnelled connectivity.

Where possible, native IPv6 connectivity is being used, but it is likely that initially most new sites will be connected via IPv6-in-IPv4 tunnels, either manual or 6to4.

The end-site perspective:

A tunnel broker service will also be deployed in due course to assist individuals seeking IPv6 connectivity at UK academic sites.

The UK academic IPv6 pilot is managed by UKERNA.
