Bermuda network topology

The Bermuda project name orginates from the triangle of connectivity provided by the network between Southampton, UCL and Lancaster, though the acronym also represents "Bringing Enhanced Routing to Multimedia Users in Distributed Academia".

The links used the JANET Managed Bandwidth Service (MBS), which enabled the three links to be established over ATM PVCs at a 2Mbit/s maximum data rate.

The SuperJANET network has since been upgraded to SuperJANET4, which currently has no equivalent to the previous MBS. As a result, the connections are being converted to tunneled IPv6in-IPv4 connections. Methods to restore native connectivity are being sought.

The diagram also show's BT Exact's IPv6 Trial network, to which Southampton connected (via UCL) during its participation in the 6INIT project.

UKERNA is currently considering methods to expand the IPv6 trial to any interested UK academic site. A roadmap for deployment should be produced by November 2001. It is expected that the extended deployment will peer with Internet 2 (probably at the 6TAP) and European and Japanese IPv6 networks.

The Bermuda 2 project is funded by the JISC and managed by UKERNA.
