Internet 2 Collaboration

The original Bermuda project was an unfunded collaboration between the three UK universities. In its second phase, Bermuda 2 secured JISC funding to extend the IPv6 trials to include partnerships with Internet 2 sites.

There are currently three areas of collaboration:

  • Internet 2 Working Group. This WG oversees the IPv6 trials on Abilene, where currently four Cisco 7200 series routers carry tunnelled IPv6 traffic over the production IPv4 Abliene network. It is expected that an IPv6 peering will be established with this group, probably via the 6TAP in Chicago.

  • ISI. There is work progressing with ISI in VPN overlays, as part of the X-Bone work. The current software is being studied with a view to porting it to IPv6. This will require IPv6 components such as IPv6 support in the Perl scripting language.

  • CRC. Collaboration with the CRC lies in the area of conferencing tools. UCL has ported its established vic and rat video and audio conferencing tools to IPv6.

We have also recently entered into discussion with the SLAC (Stanford) regarding potential GRID and IPv6 work.

The Bermuda 2 project is funded by the JISC and managed by UKERNA.
